We’ve seen penalties used to encourage users into achieving their goals before when we wrote about GymPact, an app which offers cash rewards to gym-goers for checking in and fines them for failing to meet their targets. Now adding a social twist to this idea, new Facebook app Aherk! enables users to blackmail themselves in order to get tasks done.

Aherk! operates on the basis that pressure encourages people to get things done and that this sense of urgency is lacking when it comes personal goals such as exercise, household chores and other daily tasks. To begin, users set themselves a challenge to complete, along with a deadline. They also upload an embarrassing photograph of themselves – known as the ‘bomb’ – which Aherk! will post to their Facebook profile if they fail their task. The decision of whether or not they have failed is passed over to the user’s Facebook friends, who have three days to cast their vote. If there are a greater number of ‘fail’ votes, or an equal number of friends voting for ‘pass’ and ‘fail’ then the challenge is considered to be lost, and the photo will be posted. The aim of the app is to playfully use a threat to dissuade procrastination, but to also add an element of fun and social engagement to task completion.

Aherk! have found a light-hearted way to motivate the masses, while also including a social element. How else could social pressure be harnessed to achieve positive and beneficial outcomes?

“Composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and the rest
Petit Verdot and Malbec, the 2007’s fruit came from four sources, Alexander Valley
Mountain Estate, Knight’s Valley, Chalk Hill and Bennett Valley. This utterly perfect, flawless
wine reveals great intensity along with a wonderful perfume of roasted coffee, blueberries,
blackberries, spring flowers, forest floor and crushed rock. Full-bodied and viscous without
being heavy, the wine possesses admirable precision as well as good acidity and balance.
This stunning wine is developing beautifully. It contains 14.4% aclcohol (one of the highest
amounts) and a final PH of 3.64. It should last another 30 years.”

Le Desir 2007 – 100 points – (St. Emilion style)

“A profound blend of 44% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4%
Malbec, with 56% of the fruit from Chalk Hill, 26% from the Alexander Valley Mountain
Estate, 14% from Knight’s Valley and 4% from Bennett Valley, the 2007 is a wine of
unbelieveable intensity. It boasts a deep blue/purple color as well as notes of acacia
flowers, graphite, licorice, blackberries, blueberries and a hint of burning embers/
charcoal, superb intensity and purity, and abundant tannin in the finish. This massive wine
needs 5-6 more years of bottle age, and is meant for 35-40 years of cellaring.”
